Mourning the Loss of a Great Leader

Charles Peterson, Jr.

Bryner Chevrolet is a family. That’s the way Charles ‘Pete’ Peterson wanted it. We are all saddened by the loss of our friend and the stalwart of the dealership. Mr. Peterson passed away suddenly on Monday, February 11th. A wonderful memorial service was held February 15, 2008 at Chelten Baptist Church in Dresher, Pennsylvania.

‘Pete’ as he was known to friends and family was born in 1921 in suburban Syracuse, New York and raised on a farm. While serving in the Navy during World War II he met and married the love of his life, Mahala ‘Betty’ Bryner. Upon his return from the Pacific at the end of the war, he and his bride began their life together. The decision was made to move south to suburban Philadelphia so Betty could be close to family. It was at this point that Mr. Peterson joined the ranks of the employees at Bryner Chevrolet working for Betty’s father, Brady Bryner.

As the years passed, Pete moved up the management ladder to Sales Manager and when Mr. Bryner passed away in 1971, he purchased the agency from the estate and kept the family name and its long-standing reputation in the Jenkintown area. By that time, Pete’s sons Chuck and Dave and daughter Diane had come to work for him and have had fine careers in the automobile business over the last three decades. Five years ago, grandson Michael joined the team and we are now one of the few fourth-generation auto dealerships in the country.

Charles Peterson was active in the community at large; a member of Kiwanis and Rotary as well as the local Chamber of Commerce. He was also an active member of the congregation of Chelten Baptist Church. As a successful owner of a Chevrolet dealership his time and energy were concentrated on the business. He continued to arrive at work daily, in jacket and tie, until his final days, usually six days a week. Pete was well liked and respected by his staff and employees and even his competitors in the business. He earned that respect by the way he conducted his business and how he treated his customers and co-workers. He will be missed greatly by all of us, he was the spark that kept the engine running and now the torch is passed to the next generation. God bless you Charles Peterson, Jr., may you rest in peace.
